Here's another idea that didn't quite make it into our print edition: how to update a bag with a chain handle (this project was originally part of "The Chicest Link" on page 78). You could do this to jazz up a dull purse or to replace a worn-out/mangled handle, as was the case with my vintage alligator bag ... or is it croc? Either way, it wouldn't be easy to find a new handle that matched the old hide, so the chain was an attractive alternative.
Here's a "before" picture I took in my office while developing the story (we send shots like this to the photographer in advance so she can get a better sense of what she's signing up for -- I put this chain on the bag just as a demo).

And here's the "after" shot that was taken for the magazine.

As you can see, I changed my mind about which chain to use, but that debate aside, this makeover couldn't have been easier. I cut off the old handle, but left the D-rings that had attached it to the bag. Using two pairs of needle-nosed pliers, I opened a link on each end of the chain handle and then closed them around the D-rings. The chain is from Toho Shoji, and I didn't need to use much (about a foot) -- so for about $11, I got what feels like a brand new bag.

Katie,
I loved this idea...i have a home/decor product coming out soon that has chain and charms and an interetsing twist. This is a bit similar but it doesn't involve a purse.
maybe i will send it to you when done?

I like the use of the ribbon with the chain you show on p. 81. Wire is another great component to team up with chain because it allows you to add beads more easily. Keep up the jewelry making!
