Julie Jackson, author of the excellent book Subversive Cross Stitch, and keeper of the website of the same name, is my hero.
Here's why: A couple of weeks ago, I was e-mailing with my friend Simon and he told me he was in Chicago, visiting his sister Vera as she got ready to undergo chemotherapy for breast cancer.
You know when you hear bad news and think, "I wish I could do something for them?" But then you can't figure out what to do, so you don't do anything at all? Julie Jackson's cross stitching takes that kind of helplessness out of the equation. As soon as Simon told me about Vera -- and because I know Vera is an avid crafter -- I knew that I had to make her a "f**k cancer" cross stitch mug.
Coincidentally, I had just bought a set of blank cross-stitch mugs at JoAnn this past weekend. So for my lunch hour, I took out my copy of Julie's book, figured out my pattern, and got stitchin'.

Julie sells a "f**k cancer" kit on her website, and half the proceeds go to the Komen Foundation. (Be sure to read the testimonials on that page -- they're incredibly moving.)
