Studio Tour: Binth

While shooting the home of Suzanna Bierwirth for "Chicago Manual of Style" (January/February), I was able to visit the studio of Binth -- the company Bierwirth shares with partners Linnea Gits and Peter Dunham. We first learned about Binth when we used their alphabet poster in our Modern Baby Shower feature (July/August), but Binth creates all sorts of inspiringly designed objects like art prints, posters, notebooks, gift cards, games and more (all available on their website). Currently my son is obsessed with their matching game but one of my absolute favorites is the set of Offspring Everyday greeting cards created by Suzanna's 9 year-old son Jarek.

Bierwirth, Gits, and Dunham designed the Binth studio themselves and it's possibly one of their coolest projects -- certainly their work has been influenced by the space and vice versa. You can sense their love of color immediately: All of the paintings are by Anna Kunz, an artist who teaches color theory at both Northwestern University and The Art Institute of Chicago. Her vibrant paintings light up the studio -- they worship Kunz and her colorful work here at Binth!

The white Eames DCW's (dining chair with wooden legs) are from Herman Miller and are part of a series they released in the spring with three new washes: blue, white, and yellow. The Binth designers thought these were a brilliant spin on the classic Eames chair.

...and fabric swatches and design books add pops of color to the sleek white studio.

Amazing trinkets and tchotchkes line their bookshelves creating beautiful, very Blueprint-y tableaux that feel modern -- never cluttered or cutesy. How could you not be inspired while working in a studio like theirs?

This is a great tour, thanks!

I wanted to congratulate you on the January / February issue. I saw it two days ago at the pharmacy, and I actually flipped through it at the bar with my friends, I couldn't wait 'till I got home to see everything! The segment on watches, the small house, the fashion story on alterations... it was perfect. Are you sure you can't give us just one more issue?
