A Cut Above

On a recent shopping trip to Fairway, I discovered this beautiful wooden cutlery. It's made from bamboo, and is disposable -- in fact, it will biodegrade within four to six months. But what I love about it is its beautiful simplicity and blond wood color.

I can't wait to use them at my first spring picnic -- they'll make any picnic feel so dignified. I'd even leave them out on the counter, arranged in a glass like wooden flowers to encourage their use. (Less dishes for me!) If you can't find them at Fairway, you can buy similar bamboo utensils here and here.

I have these and I love them. They are reusable but if your guest tosses them or they are left out it's not more plastic in the environment. it's a win win.

meh. I hear the metal stuff is WASHABLE, and truly REUSABLE. Imagine! Frankly, I don't think much of most "green" products. The eco-movement is being commoditized just like everything else.

These are a good find, but the important thing to remember about biodegradable anything is that it only biodegrades if it is composted. You are not guilt-free if you use them and throw these into a standard waste bin, because they will go with the rest of the trash to a standard landfill. Nothing biodegrades well in a standard landfill because of the lack of bacteria and natural matter (though in the ground, they are not next to the the Earth - there are layers of plastic to prevent leaching - and chemicals are pumped into the waste to prevent bacteria growth.) So, by all means use these instead of plastic, but also go a step further and compost them, or even just bury them in your backyard, as opposed to throwing them in the garbage.

My guy and I used these at my semi-informal wedding, to minimize our guilt about using disposables. They went over like gangbusters!

Geez, those are FABULOUS!! Thanks for talking about them!
