Forecast: Dusty

I am grateful for two ladies that are reviving the songs and feel of the luminous and husky-voiced British ’60s songstress Dusty Springfield.

It seemed she was doomed to be associated with one song, “Son of a Preacher Man,” courtesy of the “Pulp Fiction” soundtrack.

First up: the reinterpretation of Springfield classics by alt-country chameleon, Shelby Lynne.“Just a Little Lovin” strips down singles like “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me” and “I Only Want to Be with You” to their barest -- revealing the beautiful, yearning in each. More importantly, she smartly steers clear of “Preacher Man” -- a song that, thanks to Mr. Tarantino -- can never be attempted again.

If covers aren’t your thing, there is fellow blonde Briton with the voice and swagger to rival Dusty. She even has the name: Duffy. Hailing from Wales, she clearly found some Springfield and Petula Clark records and took it from there. With her Motown-influenced pop sound and brooding, soulful voice, it’s difficult to imagine she was a mere 10 when “Pulp Fiction” was released. Until her full-length album is available here, you can get an earful on her Myspace page.

omg, i saw duffy's video this weekend and it stopped me in my tracks. i can not wait for her album to be released.

Thanks Kerstin!! You always have such great music ideas! Keep them coming. I can't tell you how much I love the Bluelines blog. It is NOW a blog I look at everyday!

Duffy's great... her name kept popping up when i lived in wales a few years ago.

I adore Duffy! Her debut album is one of the best 2008 so far. I cannot wait until it is properly released here in the States!

Duffy! I have never heard of her! She's fantastic! I can definitely hear the Petula influences in there! If she did end up covering some Petula songs, I would put my vote in for something off of the "Memphis" album. Her + those horns would = A+!

Oh, I just love Dusty and Petula Clark, so I will definitely be checking this out! Thanks for new music suggestions!
