Elizabeth Graves
You might want to lean in closer because Elizabeth always smells good. Right now, she’s either wearing CB I Hate Perfume’s
At the Beach 1966, which smells like Coppertone, sun, salt, and sand, or Chloe’s new
Eau de Parfum, a peony-heavy scent (peonies are the main flower in her upcoming wedding). When she wants to escape from the world of blush, bronzer, and brows she likes to retreat to nature, somewhere unspoiled like the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where she doesn’t have to worry about some creep on the towel next to her. Other indulgences are real Mexican cuisine (These
fish tacos meet her standards and
Alterra coffee, from her hometown of Milwaukee. She considers tanning beds evil mid-'80s torture devices, so be prepared to catch an earful if you like to bake.
Katie Hatch
Katie's favorite escape is the old bedsheets-out-the-window route. But since she's so picky about fabric, they'd probably be made of summer weight, slinky wool, or very stiff silk -- her current fabric obsessions. She has good reason to think about these things: She designs and sews most of her own clothes. (You can even watch her make a no-sew
skirt.) She finds fashion inspiration in great American designers like
Claire McCardell and
Bonnie Cashin. As a redhead, she feels it's far less cheesy and just as flattering to wear navy, aqua, and French blues than it is to don the cliched green.
Rebecca Robertson
Blame it on her parents -- both in the antique business -- but Rebecca cannot pass up the thrill of the
vintage hunt. When not cruising around town in a comically tiny vintage
Cinquecento station wagon, she's seeking out thrifty treasures -- from a tattered chair that needs reupholstering to a magazine purse to add to her ever-expanding vintage handbag
collection. Her home is often the final resting place for her finds and she likes to mix them with modern pieces to create an eclectic style. Like a true Italophile, she loves wine, pasta, and, well, her husband. Together they own
Passanella and Son, a wine store in New York City. People have been left speechless by her gift for accessorizing.
Kerstin Czarra
You won't catch Kerstin dragging her heels. She's a multifaceted writer, editor, music lover, and desk-bound mental traveler. One place she'd like to travel for real is Karen Blixen's
farm. But for now, she'll settle on listening to the Beatles' "
Revolver" on repeat, picking out the perfect shade of
gray, and begging her mom to make her grandmother's crab cakes. Even her butter's got
culture.
Callie Jenschke
When Callie, a freelance market editor and prop stylist, is not busy fulfilling her lifelong schlepping sentence, she enjoys counting stairs and collecting vintage tracks off her
favorite music blog. She takes great pleasure when people comment on her tediously thought-out dance-party mixes and is desperately seeking help for a wicked case of closet
online shopping.
Page Marchese Norman
Page has
never met a mushroom she didn't like -- she's obsessed with their form and collects all things related to fungi. A lover of all crafts, Page is a ceramist who worships
Taizo Kuroda and
Rupert Spira. She's also an aesthete of the rarest kind: a democratic one. She doesn't care who the designer is or what an object's value is -- if something speaks to her, she listens. This winter, she's been mixing neon pink accents with cream and white ensembles, but if she were in a fashion magazine, they'd label her look "country-chic," because she mixes and matches delicate patterns with unique handmade details. Although her husband may chuckle at her unabashed love of nature, she and her daughter, Coco, delight in collecting and inspecting rocks, moss, and plant matter that they lug home from far-away places.
Shane Powers
What they say is true: He gives good quotes. Nuggets of gold plop out of Shane's mouth and if you're lucky, you can be around to catch one. His favorite color is mauve with a hint of peach, and he likes it best when paired with white, gray, or black. No, he's not joking. When in need of an escape, Shane climbs into his bathtub, and he delights in any meal that can be made in one pot, excluding cottage cheese -- that's just gross.
Kendra Smoot,
kendrasmoot.com
Kendra's crafty like that: She refuses to spend too much on something she can make herself. Like Kerstin and Shane, she loves the color gray -- but only as long as she can accessorize it with a beautiful blue or yellow. Speaking of color, check out her prop
styling -- it's a color lover's dream. She finds inspiration in
typography, vintage shops on
Etsy, and the beach.
Lena Corwin,
lenacorwin.blogspot.com
Lena's life seems to follow a pattern. Make that many patterns. The San Francisco-born textile designer and illustrator is drawn to graphics of all sorts. Before starting her own
business, she worked in fashion for the likes of Marithe + Francois Girbaud and Calvin Klein. She is the author of Printing By Hand, a crafts book about printing on everyday surfaces, from stationery to bed sheets, which will be published in the fall of 2008. She has also illustrated two children's crafts books, titled
Kids Crochet and
Kids Weaving. She currently calls Fort Greene, Brooklyn, home, but has dreams of being bicoastal. A cocurator of
Lines and Shapes, an artist collective and small book publisher, she also loves pickles and making winter soups.
Lisa Congdon and Rena Tom,
raredevice.net
Co-owners of the inspiring shop
Rare Device (located in San Francisco and New York City), Lisa and Rena are not only tastemakers, but also artists in their own right. Lisa is a mixed-media artist and
illustrator who loves working in her art studio in the
Dogpatch neighborhood of San Francisco, eating peanut butter, wearing French schoolgirl dresses, and ogling the work of
Betsy Walton. Rena is a jewelry designer who spends her free time cruising on her vintage-style
bike, admiring jewelry by
Inhabit Structures, hiking in the park with her dog, and devouring salted caramel ice cream from
Bi-Rite Creamery. They share many loves, including -- but not limited to -- goofing off, blogging, and making stuff.
Scott Horne
Scott is feeling blue: every shade of it, and especially how it looks when paired with yellow, gray, orange, and black. Scott is a prop stylist who has had the privilege of working for two of his favorite stores:
Area Home and
John Derian. Always impeccably turned out, Scott hearts all things
Marni and
A.P.C., and is a huge fan of
Nuxe's creme fraiche moisturizer. If teleportation existed, he'd like to be shopping right now at
Labour and Wait in London or lounging in Les Alpes Maritime in France.
Regan Burns
Without fail, Regan cracks up when uttering or hearing the phrase "
Bob Loblaw's Law Blog." A gourmand who studied at the
CIA (no, not that
CIA) and developed recipes for
Saveur and
Chow magazines, she can give you a restaurant recommendation in a second flat. Something of a valley girl, she loves retreating to both the Hudson and Napa valleys. You can see what she's eating for dinner
here.
Jodi Levine
They say you should stick to what you know, and Jodi knows how to have fun. A self-described "big kid," Jodi heads up all
Kids (yes, she was editor in chief of the magazine) content for Martha Stewart. And she always mixes work with play: Her daily duties range from developing new crafts to styling donut photo shoots to having
grilled cheese parties with her coworkers. It's widely agreed that she has an infectious smile -- although she wishes she were spreading it some place warm. Like any red-blooded child, her favorite foods are cookies and any combination of cheese, tomato, and bread -- yes, that's code for "pizza."
