While I was waiting in the two-hour line for a world-renowned lobster roll at Red's Eats, I had a fair time to consider the state of Maine's relationship with the whoopie pie. They
have been a longtime favorite of mine, and I was lucky enough to find a few fine specimens on my trip. However, the example I found at Red's Eats was by far my favorite -- and later I found out that it's Martha's, too!
Perhaps I should review what a whoopie pie is for those, like I had been, unfamiliar folks.
Whoopie pies are New England treats that consist of a chocolate cake and some sort of cream filling -- and can vary widely in quality of confection, as well as the precise ingredients.
However, the "gourmet" whoopie pie produced by Cranberry Island Kitchens should, through my dedicated study, be considered the gold standard for these regional delicacies.
And, lucky enough for you, the local bakers at Cranberry Island Kitchens shared their recipe with Martha. Their filling was creamier and more buttery than any I'd tried, and the chocolate cake was, well, a really beautiful chocolate cake rather than something masquerading as either characteristic. Seriously, make them -- they're so good.
Try one of our recipes that plays with some of the flavors of the traditional Whoopie pie.
Since I was so pleasantly surprised by my unofficial whoopie pie discoveries on my summer vacation, it made me wonder what regional favorites you might have.
What is your favorite regional treat?

Whoopie Pies are such fun desserts to make :0) My favorite "regional treat" is the Ohio buckeye (the chocolate-peanut-butter balls).

There's never enough cake and this is an especially delicious treat. Thanks for reminding me that life is richer when you make a little whoopie.
