Carole King and Fall Blooming Perennials in Bedford

Carol King

I was so thrilled to have Carole King visit and perform on my TV show the other day.  Who isn’t familiar with her music?  I still listen to her very first album released in 1971 called Tapestry.  It’s filled with such wonderful hits.  What you may not know about Carole is that she is a prolific songwriter for many other artists as well, with hundreds and hundreds of songs to her credit.  She is also very concerned with our environment and is very involved in raising money to help protect it.  Carole has just released a new DVD called “Welcome to My Livingroom.” (A Concert DVD)  Here we are together at my show.

Colchicum and My Pictures

Why do I love Colchicum so much?  Colchicum are fall-blooming perennials, producing cheerful color in the garden when most other plants have faded and are going dormant.  Often misnamed ‘Autumn Crocus’, cultivars are available with single or double blooms in shades of white, lavender, and pink.  Where crocus blooms in the spring, Colchicum actually reverses that plant’s schedule by producing shiny, strap-like leaves in late winter or early spring and then flowering in the fall.  These plants are hardy in zones 4 – 9 and it is best to plant their little bulb-like corms in late summer or very early fall so they can establish a good root system before winter and also send up that beautiful bloom.  Plant the corms in partial shade, 4 – 6 inches deep, in rich, well-drained soil, and bring some spring-like charm to your autumn garden.

Here are some really nice shots of my Colchium that I took a few days ago, I used my Canon EOS-1D to get these. I hope you enjoy them!

I still listen to "Tapestry" as well. It's one of my all time favorites. It just makes you feel warm. Carole King was another in a series of great guests this season on the show.

Beautiful picture of you and Carole, great show the other day!
I have a Cannon Rebel XTi camera and I love it to pieces! Don't they just take great photos, we love to see the photos from Bedford. Have a great day Martha,
Claudine

Hi Martha,
It was wonderful to see the talented Carole King on your show; she writes such beautiful songs and so many of them too!

I tried to purchase some Colchicum a few weeks ago but I was too late; they were sold out. I really like that little plant and think they will look nice in my rock garden. Thanks for introducing them to us!
Trish

What gorgeous flowers Martha, and what lovely shots.

Loving your blog. Welcome to the bloggy world!

Hi Martha, I love your show, and never miss it, even though I watch it on a little blk & white 5" TV here at the office (self employed) and mute it when clients come in. I get to see what's going on, and love your guests and humor. You inspire me, and I love the blog. You inpower women, and I admire you more all the time. Kathy

Martha, I just love that you are so supportive if your daughter, Alexis. That's just so cool! And, her blog and baking are GREAT. I listen to Whatever on my drive home from work and noticed that your show now follows the "Whatever" show. That's great. Now, I can listen to both of you. PS: Love the pictures you took of you colchium & look forward to your future blogs. I wish you and Alexis the very best.

Hi Martha!

I look forward to viewing your show each day after I come home from work (I record it on the dvr). Today you said you needed a lift and your guest, Joy, had three suggestions for you. I laughed out loud when you said later you would follow them! That gave me a much needed lift after a long week.
Your show and magazine have been such a plethora of information and an encouragemnt to learn something new everyday. I have subscribed from its inception and now treat myself to your program on Sirius-only today with this rain on the Eastcoast, there was no signal. I missed laughing with Jennifer and Alexis on my ride home.
As a Quality Manager, I can attest to the exceptional MSLO products and designs I have enjoyed over the years. Everything you do is about quality and continuous improvement, but do you have a Quality Department at MSLO?

Have a good weekend, Martha.

Hi Martha! I'm so impressed with how many artists that Carole King is attached to without us really knowing. She is truly an icon. I am off to continue cleaning and cooking and baking for our annual Halloween party. It's only midnight, I've got the whole night to go! I'm being audrey Hepburn from "Breakfast at Tiffany's" this year. I've been waiting a LONG time to finally "play" her. Maybe somehow I could figure out a wat to send you a picture. Thank you so much for all you and your staff's endless ideas. The party would not be the same without them!!

Sue:)

Greetings of sorrow and joy to you Martha..i miss your mom..but i rejoice over all the goodness you and your family have contributed to planet earth..and my home..since i first started to read and watch you. I thank God for you over and over..when i'm oiling my garden tools..or saving the last scrap of something from a bowl. May God continue to bless..keep..and use you to spead His goodness in the varied and numerous ways you do..shalom and blessings..joanne

Dear Martha:
I have a gardening question.
In my Condo I try to grow herbs such as basil or oregano, etc
in a medium size clay pot.
What happens is Mold starts to grow on the surface of the dirt,
a fuzzy gray mold. What am I doing wrong?
Sincerely
Frank B Walpole Mass

Martha, I look forward to coming home to watch my Tivo'd Martha..a longtime fan of all you do to make each day brighter. I'd like to offer condolences to you and your family over the loss of your mom, a remarkable woman. My mom (75) and I were both saddened and wanted to thank you for the shared moments we have spent with the two of you in your kitchen and ours. God Bless, Rose and Dianna
