Jodi - my head gardener (and her gloves!)

Jodi Capobianco is a wonderfully talented gardener who has been working in my gardens for the past five years.  Jodi credits her family as to why she chose gardening as her profession.  Her mother and stepfather are real hands-on people who were always involved with some kind of domestic project.  Jodi was exposed to all sorts of undertakings, including remodeling and rebuilding.  But, what fascinated her the most was how involved her family was in the garden.  Jodi recalls grow lights set up in the basement with her stepfather growing impatiens and many other annuals from seed.  She loved helping plant the seedlings in the springtime and tending the garden throughout the summer.  Jodi really experience the happiness that gardening can bring and pursued work in garden centers and florist shops, eventually earning a degree in horticulture.

Jodi started out as an intern at my home on Turkey Hill.  Today, at my Bedford property, she coordinates nine employees, including gardeners and grounds’ keepers.   And what does Jodi enjoy doing after a week of work at my property?  She simply loves driving home to Massachusetts and helping her parents in their garden and with other various projects that are going on.

It always makes me happy when I see that my employees are protecting their bodies - like Jodi in this photo.  Jodi bought these long gloves (below)  to shield her forearms when pruning roses.  They really do the trick.  They are so sturdy, yet flexible and she enjoys wearing them for many gardening chores.  Jodi found these gloves, on line, at www.westcountygardener.com.  And she says they have other styles, as well.

Because I know how much Jodi enjoys her gloves, I gave her this pair that I found in Washington over Thanksgiving.  They are so warm and waterproof and very flexible.  In fact, they fit like a glove!!! http://www.glacierglove.com

I belive that Jodi has a great job, with a really nice boss!

I pick rosehips in the late summer, those kind of gloves would probably be a good idea.

I too love to garden and might just have to get me a couple pairs of new gloves. I am always looking for gloves that hold up well and I can't seem to find them at regular stores. Online sounds like the way to go.

I am definitely getting me a pair of the long gloves; they are what I have been looking for because I am allergic to two plants in my front yard that I'm always cutting down. The redness, the itching...yikes!

Jodi looks very happy in the garden and so do the plants. I wonder what those little white bulbs are...hmmm. Trish

There can never be enough gloves. I went to haul straw the other day only to realize I had left my gloves in a coat pocket in the other truck.

I love the long gloves. This style is on my to get list, since some of my rose plants have thorns that can be lethal.

What a good looking gardener you have Martha! Very cute indeed, any chances she is single? Love the blog and I will certainly purchase a pair of those gloves.

Gardening is my middle name! Jodi has a dream job. Gloves are always an issue for me. I have very small hands and I've yet to find a sturdy pair of gloves to fit me. Children's gloves aren't sturdy enough. I will check out the gloves, however, in hopes of finding some small enough.

Gotta get my dad some of those gloves! He's the gardener in the family.

I know this is off topic, but can you share more with us about your chickens? I heard you say on a recent show that your new chickens just started laying eggs. I live in Cincinnati, and we were just given three Japanese bantams. We have been the recipient of three eggs over the last three days! What can you share with us, Martha?

Hi Martha, I absolutely love your blogs! Your subjects are either about things that I love to do or are about facinating things that are so much fun to learn about. Thank you for providing all of this for all of us to enjoy. I missed your show on TV today but heard you on Sirius radio. I hope your laryngitis is improving. Take care. Jan

They seem really thick, though - does she still have good control with them?

I have just finished watching the show in Australia and am concerned as is my family that Martha is not well.I hope that she is feeling better soon, it is hard to think that you guys are so cold in USA when we are sitting in 40 degree temps at present. Keep well everyone and have a happy and safe holiday season.

Oh thank you so much for the link to purchase Jodi's gloves! I had a similar pair that are leather and the finger tips finally wore out after 10 years. I was upset but now I've found these...thanks!

I just wanted you to know that after I read this particular blog on Wednesday, I went to West County Gardener online and ordered a pair of the rose colored pruning gloves. Would you believe they came in the mail today?! That is what I call great service! They are so nice I dread getting them dirty and they are a perfect fit. They come up to my elbows and now my forearms won't break out in a rash when I handle the philodendrun and the Moses in the bullrush that need constant pruning and replanting. Please tell Jodi thanks for finding them. Trish

I have been trying to get on for awhile, so I won't write anything till I see if this goes through.
Keep up all the GOOD THINGS.

I finally made it on...GREAT!!!!
I wanted to tell you about some gloves that I found several years back. They are called ATLAS FIT and come in sizes from small to X-large. They are cotten gloves, dipped in blue rubber...except for the back, which allows your hands to breath. You can garden with out getting your fingers wet, and you can pick up nails, or coins, while wearing theses gloves. The only place I've been able to find them is in a few ACE Hardware stores. Some carry them, some don't, but they last a good long time, making it worthwhile to hunt for them.
I am enjoying your Blog very much.

I think that this blog is absolutely so informative! Until I began to read your blog, I never found gardening so interesting!

for Gloria Herring (Dec 8):

The little ATLAS FIT coated-fingers gloves are available very reasonably through a catalog from A.M.Leonard (amleo.com). As well as being the best for working when everything in the garden is cold and wet, they work well for stacking firewood, too!
