The Martha Stewart Orchid

Do you know what’s blooming for me right now?  The Martha Stewart Orchid! 

It’s a real honor to have an orchid named after you, but that’s just what happened a couple of years ago during the first season of my new television show.  Art Chadwick Sr. and his son Arthur of Chadwick & Son (www.chadwickorchids.com) Orchids appeared on the show and presented me with a most spectacular Cattleya boasting large, beautiful blooms in pinks, magenta, and splashes of yellow.  The Cattleya is more commonly referred to as the corsage orchid.  This plant has been officially registered with the Royal Horticultural Society and it has been dubbed the botanical name Laeliocattleya Martha Stewart.  Art and son are famous for their orchid farm in Powhatan, VA.  Art Sr. has been growing orchids since 1945 and has had enormous success with hybridizing his plants, creating many exciting, new orchid varieties.  As you can imagine, my orchid has been well cared for in my greenhouse and my gardener, Jodi, recently brought it to the main house for me to enjoy, as it is blooming so nicely, once again.

A couple of years ago, I was thrilled at being presented with this most spectacular orchid named in my honor.  This event occurred on my television show

Of course it's blooming for you! You're Martha Stewart! Now me, I have never been able to get an orchid to bloom a second time, never, and the same with my lily plants. (Sob.) It is a great honor to have anything named after you but you deserve it! I see 2 or 3 more buds ready to open up and I think it's a beautiful color too. Trish

Hello Martha, I am not sure how to get a message over to you but I just want to tell you I really love your show but sadly I am in Malaysia too far away from where you are. I love the things you feature in your show and all the wonderful ideas you show on your show but being in Malaysia sometimes it kinda hard to get certain materials for the arts and craft ideas you teach us to make on your show. And I absolutely love flowers and gardening but as you know the Malaysian climate is not suitable for a lot of flowers so i guess all I can do is to just admire. I do wish I can be in your show but its just a dream for me but I am satisfy with just watching your show on our local TV.
Lastly, if I can fill my kitchen and home with with all your products I would. In fact my father will be building a a new house in Kuching, Malaysia and he is thinking of creating a big landscape, I do hope I can make it look like yours but I know its impossible but I will create a Japanese garden cause my mom would love a nice japanese garden and I like french garden so maybe I could combine both. What do you think?

AGAIN I RELLY LOVE YOUR SHOW.. If I have a chance one day and if your show is still on I will go o your show at least for once.

Shortly after that show when they presented you with that orchid we had the occasion to travel to VA from CA to see our daughter and her family. On the way home from our trip to Colonial Williamsburg we took a side trip and went to Chadwick and Son Orchids! We saw your orchid, though it was not blooming at the time. My husband loves orchids! We weren't able to buy your orchid at the time as it was not yet ready for sale, but we did buy another lovely orchid to take home as a souvenir!

Any tips on how to get them to bloom more than once would be so helpful. I love them but after the first bloom nothing ever seems to happen.

Hi Martha,
I just saw this article about your orchids. I was like many who couldn't get one to blowm a second time but for some reason that has turned around. Now I have them mostly blooming all year around. I guess the secret for this area (Canon City, CO)is no direct sunlight. I just love them because the blooms last soooo long!!!!!!!!!!

Hello! I love this guide to keeping an orchid! I watched this one on TV and loved it! I've never been able to keep my orchid plants for more than a month. I'm not an experienced gardener at all! But when me and my boyfriend move out of his little apartment into our new home, I'm going to have a big garden in honor of Martha! And to keep me busy when I'm not in school or taking care of our four month old Brat Terrier pup named Loki! I was wondering, about the organic gardens. If you plant short plants next to tall plants, would it matter with nutrition and sunlight? I would think that the taller (for example) tomato plants would rob small strawberry or parsley plants of their nutrients and sunlight? Just wondering!
