Winter scenes from a rare snowfall
A frog doorstop in the snow - he does not look happy
This is what the farm looked like at 8 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 22.
The wrapped boxwood shrubs look like big mounds.
The old corn crib covered in snow
All the fences looked wonderful with their four-inches of sticky snow.
A bluebird house is very quiet right now in a snowy climate.
A spruce looking beautiful covered in snow
An American beech is still holding its leaves!
The woodpile covered in snow - oops! - no dry firewood for the weekend!
The woodland stream is gradually filling with late winter rains and snows.
Another view of the beautiful gurgling stream
A ball ornament on a stone wall covered in a topknot of snow
Paw Paw up to his belly in snow - it's hard to induce him to come
inside when he's walking through the snow - he loves it and the cold!
Finally blue skies emerged on Sunday after a very gray week - everything looked shimmering!
The house looked pristine with its snowy roofs and wrapped boxwoods mounded with white snow.
I love the shadows cast by the antique white spruce fencing on the brilliant snow.
From left to right - Rufus, Billie, and Clive making thier way delicately - they don't like deep snow.
In the same order - hanging out right next to their run-in shed.
They refused to come to me because that would have required making a
new path through the crunchy snow.
A view of the stable and stable yard from up by the donkey pasture
The peony beds - perfectly outlined by the mounds of snow - what a great sight in the bright sunlight!
The corn crib and old apple tree and deep shadows at 9 AM on Sunday were breathtaking.

What lovely photos! I especially like the one of the spruce fence with its shadow off to the right. Where I live one must travel *to* the snow, and I sometimes feel a pang of regret for leaving snowy climates...

So beautiful!! Thanks for sharing. I like your snow better than ours. I live in Alberta Canada right next to the mountains and it is beautiful when it is freshly fallen.

Oh My! What a treat to see the landscape after a perfect snowfall. An extra treat for those of us in So. California who live in a Mediterranean climate year round.
There must be an '08 Christmas card image here somewhere. . .

Hi Martha, What beautiful photos of your farm during the recent snow storm that blanketed your area. It is amazing how everything changes and looks so pristine after a snow fall. The blue sky adds another gorgeous dimension to your already beautiful photos. I love the photos of Paw Paw and the donkeys. We had our snow in the Pacific Northwest a couple of weeks ago, with avalanches in the Cascade Mountain Passes that closed the passes for several days. Now we have beautiful 50+ degree weather and no rain for over a week! I guess we sent our snowy weather your way. Enjoy! Jan

I have to laugh at the donkies. How cute. Isn't it something how they have formed their "order" and stick to it. Talk about organization. You are too funny in describing their reluctance to venture into the snow. I wonder why they didnt like it.
The farm looks like a fairytale to me. Trees rule!

I missed part of the show today, but I was excited to see you wearing "that white sweater". I bet lots of knitters watching would love to knit one like it.

Merci encore.

Hi Martha,
Winter is one of my favorite times of the year. I just love the way the snow in a few hours can transform a dreary landscape into a winter wonderland..
Enjoyed looking the snowy pictures you took on your farm.
Hope we get some more snow before winter is over!

I love how the landscapes during winter months emphasize positive and negative spaces. You can truly appreciate both the simplicity in nature as well as the complexity. Mother Nature is an amazing designer, and I draw much inspiration from her. Apparently you do as well. Thanks for sharing.

hi martha! i have vhs tapes saved from your very first series of shows (i am such a fan!) thank you so much for the house tour and for being so open and friendly. i tivo your show every day and my kids and i watch it together. you have really made cooking, homemaking and crafting something i feel proud doing for and with my family (as well as working outside the home).

I love when it snows (a rare occurrence in South Carolina)! We got about four inches a little over a month ago here, and I was running around doing the same thing: taking pictures. It's such a pretty trick Mother Nature likes to put on, blanketing once familiar surroundings. It's also ever so fun to watch how different animals react. We used to have a Border Collie growing up who would roll around with us kids as we made snow angels...and the cat would not set a toe out of the doorway.
Thank you for sharing the beautiful wintery photos! Your farm is lovely, snow-blanketed or not.

Hi Martha,
Looks like it was a great morning for hot-cocoa, or maybe a good ol' cup-of-Joe.
I agree with you, the shadows object cast on snow are beautiful! The cool purple and blue hues of the shadows contrast handsomely with the stark, crisp whiteness of the snow. The shapes are very captivating as well.
I must confess, I covet thy neighbor's burros. Those rascals are too cute for words.
Stay warm.

I love the animals in the snow. The donkeys are hysterical. I love Martha Stewart's love for all her animals; and I also have raised so many horses and dogs. We don't get much snow anynore in southern middle Tenn. My brother and I own two beautiful old Southern homes. They are side by side. Wish I could tell
Martha my story with all my animals
and my Southern heritage.

Thank you for taking the time to do this blog for us - - your fans!
I am another crafty, artistic, organizing, controlling, Martha, and have always admired you for being so much like ME! (Smile!) I have spent most of my life (soon to be 70 years old) raising children and grandchildren, instead of making money with all of my talents and aspirations. At this time of life, I do feel that I have spent my life as God wanted me to, and the limited time I have had for decorating, painting, crafting, gardening, raising Arabian horses, etc., was always the icing on my cake. I have been with you since your first TV shows and the first magazine issue. I do enjoy living vicariously through your TV shows, your magazine, and now your blog! Thank you for being the icing on the cake for so many women!
God bless you!

yours is the first blog I have ever visited and what a treat to see such beauty! Like your living in heaven before heaven! Paw Paw's kidney problem caused me to visit in that I am a newly diagnosed chronic kidney disease patient and was not aware of how many persons (1 in 9) across the nation were afflicted by this and wonder if the same ratio applies to pets since it's classified as a silent disease and one that needs promotion. Thank You for sharing your beautiful farm in winter and I wish Paw Paw "well in a hurry" thoughts!

Hello Martha,
I am very happy that Paw Paw is receiving such good care from such an exemplary veterinary practice. On your television show, you commented that if your dog does not want to hop out of the car and rush in to see your veterinarian, then there must be something "not quite right" with that veterinarian. I don't think that statement is fair. I am a certified veterinary technician at a wonderful veterinary hospital. We often have pets who are truly fearful for many reasons including: the unfamiliar surroundings, noises from any other pets in the hospital, separation anxiety, and a host of other factors. We work very hard to relax and assure the animals before we perform any invasive procedures such as placing a catheter, taking a radiograph, etc. Some pets are just inherently fearful, and it is not a reflection of the quality of veterinary care they are receiving. I'm sure you'll be pleased with the improvement you'll likely see in Paw Paw's blood values and quality of life. Thanks for showing your audience how to be a responsible pet owner.

Have always enjoyed your advising and instructing women everywhere on the everyday art of homemaking. Have 6 dogs, 5 are rescued,(plus 1 cat, left behind by one of my 4 grown children, because of cost), I live in the country where many pets are thrown away. Have always had many animals drop by and stay.... I wish there was a way for you to address the issue of high cost animal care today. It upsets me that perhaps many people of lesser means are not able to enjoy the gift of animal love. My husband has assured me that when I die he will hold a spay/neuter clinic with donations in lieu of flowers. (2nd bout of shingles in 4 monthes, it may be sooner than we hope!!!!)

Martha,
Your home and grounds are impeccable! I just love to see your home! I am imagining your peony beds in May! Hmmm but these photos are wonderful and just so pristine! When it snows like this, don't you just love to go outside and smell the snow and hear the silence around? I know I do. We got 13 inches in CT from this storm. I think your darling burros have Yorkshire terrier in them...my dogs don't tread anywhere we don't make a path when it snows. Paw Paw looks like he's just plain having fun in his snow playpen! LOL You are such a good boy! Your pets are just to precious for words! LOVE THEM!

hi Martha,
i have 2 cats, 1 is from Morris Township, NJ and now lives in Atlanta. I loved the segment about brushing the teeth of your pet, as it can cause so many health problems. Also my Jersey girl , Toodie age 12, has been diagnosed with renal failure from a result of kidney stones. Feline CRF. she has had it 6 months, and she was on the IV drip for a week to stabilize her blood values. she was almost near death , and the Georgia Vet Specialists brought her back to health.. her blood values are stable, and I give her the IV every day now myself.. she feels great and it loving as ever.. Renal failure is not a death sentence.. I am so glad you had Paw Paw on and can give others hope. I have had the most loving 6 months with my cat and wouldn't change a thing. The daily IV is a breeze now. take care and hugs to Paw Paw.

Dear Martha,
What a wonderful place to live. You must be so proud when you see it in photographs. You work so hard, it's great that you have a peaceful place to recharge your batteries. Thanks for sharing it with us. You're an inspiration.
Your friend,

Thank you for sharing these beautiful snow pictures from February 22nd. The pictures reminded me of my grandfather's farm in Tennessee, walk out of the house after it snowed and soak in the beauty and listen, there is no other sound.

Hi Martha,
Your snowy pictures are beautiful. I love snow in winter, but now I'm looking forward to the spring and my many blooming bulbs. My place is not as beautiful or as large as yours, but I try to pack a lot into it. I'm always planting something where ever I can find space. I'm looking forward to stopping by your website often to get more ideas. Thank you for all you have to offer. Take care.
