My new MacBook Air

UPDATE AGAIN!:

Yes, I do love Firefox, great browser! Oh, and I also like the program Picasa to store and organize my photos. The computer I use for that is a Sony VAIO laptop with a 250GB hard drive and a 17" screen. It also has a built in HDTV tuner and I will try to snap a picture of it soon! Perhaps I will have one of my cats near it.

UPDATE TODAY:

I wanted to let everyone know that I use many different kinds of computers. How about this HP touch screen computer in my stable? My stable manager Betsy uses it everyday, especially to check the weather maps to watch for anything that may affect the horses while they are out in the paddocks. (Doesn't Sharkey appear to be snoozing?)

UPDATE:

Many of you have commented that you think I should use Parallels for my new Mac to run Windows as well - I actually DID know about that!  I just like having the two computers side by side, as sometimes I need to have my email and schedule up on one, while browsing the Web on the other.   As you can imagine, I multi-task all the time. My assistants all seem to have different preferences (Mac. Vs. PC) and I like to give them both options when they need to do some work at my desk.  Thank you for your helpful suggestions!

I was so excited when my new MacBook Air arrived the other day.  When I opened the box and examined this laptop, I was amazed by how razor thin and how light it is – just .76 of an inch and only 3 pounds.  It has a full-size illuminated keyboard, which is terrific for working in a dimly lit car or on an airplane.  And I really love the trackpad, which works in much the same way as the Apple iPhone, giving you many more options by simply moving your fingers.  I also use an HP laptop on a regular basis because I like to be well versed on both platforms and be able to multi-task.  Both computers sit side by side on my desk in my kitchen and having them right there together is very convenient for me.  It’s a little difficult to photograph just how thin this MacBook Air is, but you can see for yourself by stopping at an Apple store or checking it out on line at www.apple.com.

The MacBook Air is truly a technological thing of beauty.  When it’s not traveling on the road with me, it looks great on my desk as you can see here.

And of course, Sharkey has to check it out too!

Love the photos.
But please tell me how I can write to you about other things.
For instance, I have an idea for one of your shows.
And I am trying to find a past show. I am not having any luck with your website. I am a clutz on the computer.
Thank you

I think Sharkey wants to learn how to use your new computer.

Martha, just when I thought it impossible to love you even more you offer this glimpse of technolove. Auggggh I really want one of those things!

It makes all the apple users of the world pleased as punch that you appreciate our platform :)

I bet Sharkey knows how to read and sends you notes to COME HOME MAMA when you are on the road! Do you no longer use PC's Martha you like the MAC'S better? Do you use Firefox browser? What size screen is that ?
Thank you for the info on Ask Martha today the Shibas puppies look like Chow Chows when they are little but as an adult dog they look like foxes. I can't decide but I would like to stay with my Chow Chow breed they are such great dogs. I am glad Paw Paw is doing much better. Thank you for taking my call I appreciated it. A good Ask Martha radio hour as usual.
Happy Easter Martha.

It's so cool that you are up to date with the latest tech!

Martha you are the coolest! Your new laptop looks great, I want one too! I also love new technology and I certainly know how exciting it is when something new arrives.
I really enjoyed your photos of the first signs of spring and also the Macy's flower show, thank you for sharing them. It reminded me of looking at my grandma's photo album - she loved roses and was a very keen (and very good!) gardner also. Seeing all those pretty flowers and bulbs in your pictures is just lovely!
Best wishes and Happy Easter!

Hi, Martha,
Thanks for the glimpse at your new MacBook Air, amazing technology.
Glad to hear on your show yesterday that Paw Paw is better even though he had a setback. A sick dog in the family is wrenching to the heart. Hope he's even better now.
Sharkey is certainly checking out the computer.
Hello to Francesca as well as Sharkey and Paw Paw---and to the cats and donkeys and all!
Kathy

Your teachings are all about making life elegant yet practical and it seems that you found the perfect pairing in the MacBook!

It is iportant for all of us to keep up to date on the advances of technology as there are many ways it can simplify our lives. As an artist, I can fully appreciate all that Macs can offer. Maybe one of these days when I make some big sales I'll treat myself to a MacBook!!!

Thank you for the write up on your new goodie.

www.sharkey@marthastewart.com I love you Sharkey. Nan

I am glad you like the new MacBook Air! I am intrigued by the small size of this computer. I am considering it for my next laptop. Thanks for the review!

I love seeing pictures of Sharkey, Francesca, and Paw Paw. Thanks for sharing! Happy Easter!

I've been a Mac user for years. My dog, like Sharkey, shows a keen interest in my laptop. He has walked all over the keyboard several times. This can't be good for it!

I saw the MacBook Air at Frye's this past weekend and it is a technological wonder. It is so light and portable. We are trying to decide between the Air and the new MacBook. Decisions, decisions! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on it!

Martha:

I wish I could get a new Mac Book air after seeing yours, but I just purchased a little Panasonic Tooughbook CF-W5 laptop in December. It's alsmost as thin and weighs just under 3 lbs. It's all silver and the screen is somewhat smaller than your Mac; about 12 inches.

The drawback with my Panasonic is that smaller screens can be a hinderance when using it for craft projects or photoshop where you want everything as large as possible.

I hope you and Sharkey enjoy using the Mac!

Happy Easter!

Happy 500th show, Martha! You continue to inspire me, along with all of your devoted fans. Thank you for making home and homemaking interesting, beautiful and fun!

I also use a MacBook Air. I love that I can bring it anywhere and barely even notice it's in my bag!

You mentioned you use an HP laptop to run Windows, but did you know you can also run Windows on your Mac? With Leopard (the operating system on your MacBook Air) you can use the program Boot Camp to run Windows (and any program that only runs on Windows). This means you can enjoy the design of your MacBook Air even when you need to use Windows!

Hi Martha,
Congratulations on your 500th show, I think I have seen most of them through out the years. Your great blog is so inspiring, I read it every morning as I do the newspaper.
Thank you and Happy Easter.

Hi Martha,

Congratulations on your 500th show! By the way, you are just charming with those hilarious comedians you have on. You know when not to take yourself too seriously. Isn't life grand!

Good for you that you are showing people that it is a necessity to be wired. Especially the older generation.

Keep on with what you do.

Hi Martha, The diversity of your blog, from day to day, is amazing. Not only are the subjects interesting, but I think you cover subjects that will appeal to everyone. I can't wait each day to see what you are going to present and I love each and every one. I often go back and look at previous blogs, especially on the weekends. Thanks for making them all available. I also love the diversity of Sharkey. One day she is flying through the air, then she is a donkey herder and now she is a technology expert! What will she do next?! Thank you so much for sharing. Jan

Martha,

Just wanted to chime in, check out VMWare for Mac you can run both Windows and Mac OS X on your Air even at the same time. Imagine, you'll be simplifying so much and you won't need to carry two laptops. I use it and it runs great on my Mac.

Your MacBook Air can run Windows too! Did you know that? You can set it up to either boot from Windows, just like a regular PC or buy a virtualization program that allows you to run OS X and Windows at the same time.

Time to kick that PC to the curb.

Run Windows at native speed.

Martha,

congrats on the new macbook air - i've checked them out, and they are very cool :-). With respect to your HP Laptop: just wanted to point that you can run windows in a virtual machine right on the mac with software called parallels (you have to have a separate copy of windows to install ), or as another poster commented you can "dual-boot" the macbook with "bootcamp" which is part of leopard (also requires separate copy of windows) - very easy to set up but you have to boot out of mac os x to get to windows vs the virtual machine, where you can have windows running in the virtual machine while you are using the mac. I use them both and they meet different needs - if you want to run a 3D game, bootcamp is the only option. If you just want to bring up the occasional windows application, then the virtual machine route is probably better, and it's speed is actually very fast, all things considered.

Martha...the MacBook Air is truly amazing! I now feel 'outdated' with the Dell Inspiron 1420 that i received for Christmas but love it nonetheless...an it is in luscious garden green! So marvellous is all this tech stuff...one is never lonely and can truly stay connected and aware of what is happening in the world every minute of the day.

NIce one. I have the bigger Macbookpro and love it. As said above u can run windows on your Mac with either bootcamp as a duel boot system or like i prefer I use VMWare Fusion to run windows XP and and OS X at the same time. Parallels aso does the same thing. 1 interesting feature of the Air is you can use a dvd drive wirelessly say from your PC or any Mac. A very cool interesing feature.
Blessings

Two things:

- Parallels Desktop lets you run Windows apps *at the same time*, without rebooting: http://parallels.com

- Get a TimeCapsule from Apple, so you're always backed up: http:/apple.com/timecapsule - it would suck to lose everything!
