My helicopter ride over the farm - view my photos and make a comment please!
Last weekend, despite inclement skies, I went for an exciting helicopter ride aboard Charles’s chopper, piloted by Bill Lavallee. Bill is wonderful to fly with and is always ready to share many terrific stories. The destination that day was to fly right over my farm. Someday soon, I will show you photos of what that parcel of land looked like when I bought it. I cannot believe how much it has changed over a short period of time! Enjoy these photos as I certainly enjoyed the point of view.
This is our approach to my property. The stables are what you see in the center.
We’re coming around to the front of the property at Maple Avenue. This is a good shot of the greenhouses, vegetable garden, equipment barn, and hay barn.
Look how spectacular the vegetable garden is. This is the best year yet.
We’ve circled around to the entrance of the property. I didn’t realize how nearby the Cross River Reservoir actually is. We don’t usually see it because the land is on a gradual slope down to it.
The ‘Summer House’ is on the left at the corners of Maple Avenue and Girdle Ridge – Look closely - you can see the boxwood garden in the corner. My main residence, the ‘Winter House,’ is in the center foreground of the photo. The peony bed is beyond and between the 2 buildings and the curved structure on the right is the pergola. The 4 little buildings in the rear are the chicken and turkey coops.
Another shot of the stables facing Girdle Ridge.
More of the fields with carriage roads encircling them.
This is one of the ‘backbones’ of the property – the composting area – I just love this place. All the different mounds are at various stages of decay. This is a big reason why the gardens are flourishing this year. Composting takes time, as do gardens.

Martha,
That looks absolutely amazing. Your home is gorgeous. I enjoy your blog!

Martha, Seeing your farm from that view kinda reminds me of one of my favorite scenes from the film "Out of Africa" when Meryl Streep's character, Karen Blixen, sees her farm from a plane with Denis Finch Hatton, Robert Redford. What an awesome feeling to see one's home from a bird's eye view. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Hi Martha, I am in awe of your beautiful farm! I can see why you love to ride your horses around the property. It would be easy to get lost and and to forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life in New York City. What a fabulous place to come home to each day and to wake up to each morning. I remember on your old show a few years back when you had a company picnic there at Bedford. Wow! How fantastic it looks now after all of the wonderful changes you have made since you moved to Bedford. Your property is much larger than I imagined. Thank you so very much for sharing. You really make my day! Jan

Well done, Martha. Congratulations. It is truly a fine spread. I always ponder what I would do if I won the lottery or some other great windfall were to come to me. This is very near what I would consider ideal, however sometimes I am not certain I would want to be responsible for so much. It would mean lots of folks working together for my dream.
I wonder if at some point you begin to feel that it is not really all yours?
Of course sometimes I just wish for a great beach house with very little maintenance.

This is GREAT! It's great to get a perspective from the sky. What a compost heap! I had always wished we would of seen shots of turkey hill from that perspective. I've pieced pictures together over the years trying to get the layout of that property as well. I think I'm petty close. The pergola at bedford is great! Amazing shots to share. Thanks!

My 25 year old brother took a flight over my parents property last year and also took some aerial shots. Since its not something you do usually it was a great treat to get copies and see the family home from a new perspective.
I often take photos of the garden and house as I find it easier to see what work needs to be done, and you can compare to older pictures and see how far you have come!!
I enjoy watching your show every day and have managed to get an international subscription to your MSL magazine. Im a 30 year old stay at home Mom to 3 children. I love gardening, crafts, cooking ... but not ironing :)

Thank you for the "bird's eye" view of your beautiful property!
I was wondering if your vegetable garden is fenced because of wildlife, specifically deer? We have a real problem in our area, but for logistic reasons, we can't erect a physical fence to keep out the critters!

Martha,
Thank you for the peek at the boxwood garden room. I keep asking about it, and I see it's coming along nicely. It is truly amazing how much improvement has happen on the farm over the past years. It was sort of a blank slate property with really great "bones" to work with. And you have used those "bones" to there full potential. Your degree in Architectural History is clearly evident in everything you have done, from the classical design of the stables to the layout of the gardens. I can't seems to find anything on the farm that is not a pleasure for the eye. It's 360-degrees of bucolic splendor!

When you think about all the things that we see happening on your property, they usually fall into the category of, "Of course she has/would do that she is Martha Stewart."
Having seen the grand view of your property from overhead, it seems somewhat more manageable.
Obviously grand and fantastic... but it makes essential things like having chickens and trying to raise most of what you eat... obtainable.
Thanks for all that you post, for a woman who has no time... it's always the best part of my day when it comes across my blog reader!

We bought our property 14 years ago it was 100 acres of grown over land. Through hard work we have accomplished a lot, including building our own house, outbuildings and now a waterwheel to replace one that was here over a hundred years ago.

Somehow the vastness would lend an 'industrial' quality to the place, as opposed to the personal and single-effort of Turkey Hill. Lots of potential at the new place, though! Tours and maybe some businesses. .. like a real working farm. Maybe you can put out a catalogue of your own plants/seeds that could be bought, just like the commercial businesses!! Reminds me of the Shakers and their own nom-based business, like the seed business, etc...

Happy Mother's Day, Martha.
I'm remembering my own mother today who passed away during the Christmas/New Year's holidays in 2006.
I was eating my lunch prior to my work shift, while watching your beautiful tribute to your mother on Friday. I got all choked-up and could't swallow!
It was just lovely. I'll remember that song that was chosen. It was perfect!

Martha:
Thanks for posting the aerial photos of your farm. There are so many possibilites for such a large parcel of land and you are certainly making the most of it. Your staff must feel great taking part in creating something that, I'm sure, will be enjoyed by future generations
Thanks for making us a part of it, too, by often asking for our opinions and sharing your spectacular photos with us.
Happy Mother's Day!

I have enjoyed reading your magazines through the years and now watch your daily shows. Your style is very simple but yet so creative. I would love to see a show on "A Day with Martha"or a "A Week with Martha" I've always been amazed at how much you accomplish and what it takes in a normal day. First time on your blog your property is amazing.

It's fine martha, but honestly, nothing like Turkey hill... It just lacks character. It's too industrial, it dosen't look like a home. I can't believe you sold Turkey hill... It was your Graceland and it was a true home. Your Bedford home is okay, but It's too big, too trendy and too flashy. I still love you though
