What shall I name my new Hereford cattle? Vote today!
My friends and neighbors, Judy and Michael Steinhardt, keep quite a menagerie of animals on their property. They asked me recently, if I would be interested in taking in their rather adorable pair of miniature Herefords for the summer. Since they eat grass, which I happen to have an abundance of, I decided to give 'cow-sitting' a try. You may be wondering what exactly is a miniature Hereford? Well, they look just like a regular sized Hereford, but about half as big. This small-sized bovine is a rather rare breed. The general thinking about most cattle is that bigger is best. However, because of their smaller size, miniature Herefords are much easier to care for than larger cattle. They require less living space and consume far less food. And, like my miniature donkeys, these 'mini cows' make great backyard pets. This pair is about 5 years old and we’re all hoping for a little calf one of these days. Now we just have to come up with appropriate names for the cute couple. What do you think of these choices? By the way, Lily and Carlos both work for me at my house in Bedford. Jen and Ben are a famous Hollywood couple (they named their dog after me!)
SCROLL DOWN TO THE END OF THIS POST AND PLEASE CAST YOUR VOTE!
Here I am peeking at the new delivery.
Jason, the Steinhardt's property manager, is observing how the cows are doing.
Look how cute and hesitant they are!
Rufus, Clive, and Billie are coming to greet their new paddock friends.
Here are the miniature Herefords - I hope they feel at home in their new field.

Not much meat on those little guys (heh heh), but they're cute.

Love the cows and your donkeys they are so cute. I suggest the new names Verena and Ben for the cows. I would also love to see some pictures of your chickens you so frenquently mention on the show. Thanks.

Good Morning!
I think for the horns they don, your pair could be Hillary and Barack.
I have a series of animal photos coming to you through Mslletters starting on Mother's Day. Though each of these 'field animals' is named, they tell me they'd like middle initials so when they meet Martha someday, they can present her with a cheer.

Dear Martha, did you know that the breed of Herefords originated in Herefordshire, England? I know this because my Mother's maiden name was Hereford. We have cousins from Herefordshire that visit us here in the States and many of my relatives visit there. Anyway anything with the white faced Hereford cows has always been of interest to me. Maybe you could name them Sam and Nancy after my parents.
Posted by: Nan Ashby | May 07, 2008 at 01:40 AM
The are so cute. I would name them Winston and Tiffany or Jules and Mimi.

hi,i'm fm thailand and love to see your tv.programme fm cable tv. i think you have such lovely pets (but i am afraid of your dogs). Napoleon and Josephine is the suitable name for your cows. i imagined them when they heard of their name!!!! so great!!!! ha ha.
Posted by: bee | May 07, 2008 at 02:28 AM
LOL - love the "Sir Loin and Mdm. Bovine"! I, too, named one of my dogs a formal name: Mr. Charles Pugglesworth - Charlie for short (although, I still call him Mr. Pugglesworth) and I always think that gives the animal a bit more character :)
Posted by: Rachel | May 07, 2008 at 02:32 AM
Jen named her DOG Martha after you not her cat but maybe I am losing my mind lol!
I say call them Bedford and Lily
Lily for lily pond house and Bedford for C. Farms.
Bedford and Canitoe(sp)
Stewart and Lily.
or better yet Marti/marty and Stewart
Hank & Hazel
Mortimer & Maggie

Jen named her dog, not a cat, Martha Stewart. My family has raised Herefords for decades and I have never heard of a miniature Hereford. To my eye, your new charges are champion quality, if only they could be a little taller. Surely, they are not bred for beef? As far as names go, since they are an English breed, I prefer the anglophile names. How about Penelope and Worcestershire?

wau, i've always wanted to have a cow for a pet! and a calf, even better.
did you know that if you bake the milk from a cow that just had a calf you get a wonderful cheesecaketype dessert? if you have the heart, that is, to rob from the calf...
3 cups of fresh babymilk
1 tsp sugar
salt to taste
bake in 212F in a 8"x8" buttered form
approx 30-45 mins until slightly browned
enjoy warm or cold with either sugar, cinnamon and regular milk or jam or fresh fruits

Jimmy Stewart and Maureen O'Hara starred in the 1966 movie "The Rare Breed" which was about introducing Herefords to the US.
I think Jimmy and Maureen would make great names.

Charles & Camilla

I think Charles and Camilla - they would enjoy knowing that these beautiful and happy animals are named in honor of them.

They are adorable! We live in Finger Lakes Region of New York and there are a lot of cows on the farms around us and my 6 year old daughter always talks about having one. While I don't think that will happen anytime soon, we do enjoy watching the cows in the field across the road from our home. So here are some names for your consideration, Luke and Laura, Sampson and Delilah, Comet and Starr, Bently and Mercedes or how about Hershey and Snickers and then their calf can be little Baby Ruth!
Posted by: Sharon from Penn Yan | May 07, 2008 at 07:31 AM
Love them! They are wonderful, can't wait to hear how what your "girls" think of them. Martha, be careful of those horns!

Hi, Martha,
The miniature Herefords are cute. I enjoyed seeing Rufus, Clive, and Billie checking them out in their new field. My aunt and uncle used to have miniature Herefords on their farm. Thanks for letting us peek at your new additions, too. Enjoy cattle-sitting!

Sir. Loin and Madame Bovine!! Now that's funny. I like Dandy and Clover the best, it sounds to me like a pair of names for a couple of happy bovine folks enjoying a sunny spring paddock. Good luck with your decision!
Warm regards,

Instead of Hillary and Barack, how about Hill and Bill. They are as cute as your donkeys and I bet you'll have a hard time giving them up when the summer is over. Will you be getting a little calf later on? Trish

My herd is all named after country singers with instantly recognizable first names (Hank, Sr. and Lyle, the horses; George and Alan, the burros; Waylon and Willie, the goats; and Wynonna...the pig) and I've always wanted a male/female couple so I could use Johnny and June. Alas, that has not happened, so I would be pleased to loan you "Johnny and June" for your delightful little cows.

Hermione and Winston. Very handsome English names for two of a very handsome English breed. Enjoy them! I hope to hear of them again as all I can do in the city is cow-sit vicariously through you!
Posted by: Jen | May 07, 2008 at 10:42 AM
Hi Martha-
Love the little cows! I would like to see you name them William & Mary for three reasons. First, the breed orginated in England and so did our very historic College of William & Mary. Second, the first breeding herd in America was established in 1840 by "William" H. Sotham and Erastus Corning of Albany, New York. Last, the mini Herefords are known for their excellent maternal ways and Mary, is the mother of God. Good luck Martha! The little cows look very happy in your beautiful pasture!!

Hi Martha!
My mother in law had two pigs too many as the mother didn't have enough tits, so she took them inside and raised them. They apparently are quite clean animals. This was when my now husband was growing up and became involved in FFA and they entered animals into the fair. Anyway, there names were Peter and Patty. Cute- eh? By the way I am making your recipe for Lemon loaves today. Thanks, Debbie

I'll bet Sharkey can hardly wait to get in there and practice her hearding skills! Good luck with your new babies. Thanks so much for sharing. Jan

If you are looking for British names, how about Simon and Claire? That is what I named my two Siamese cats, as I wanted them to have "proper" British names. My husband is from England so now I am the only one in the house that does not have a British name.
Posted by: Mary | May 07, 2008 at 01:49 PM
Well... I think the "Sir Loin" implies that he will one day be (shhhhhh...) eaten, so that is not a good choice in my book.
Jen did name her dog --not cat--Martha and I did vote for Jen and Ben because they are such a cute couple and it would be a nice way to honor them, much like you honored Kevin Sharkey with Francesca's friend. I know they are friends and (I bet) would not be offended at all to have such cute bovines carry their names.
SO! I like Jen and Ben but am surprised that one of the choices was not Sid and Nancy!

I have Yorkshire terriers and two are named Martha and Stewart!! Everyone laughs when they meet them saying how cute you named them after Martha!
Love your photos of Bedford and all your flowers. Keep the gardening blogs coming!! Muscari are one of my favorites (don't they smell slightly grape-y too?) and PLEASE do a gardening book from Bedford to show the farm and all you do. I loved your Gardening book, it's one of my favorite's.

Dear Martha,
Its not often in this world that people love cows for their natural beauty! I own a pet steer, and get asked often if he's for meat; however, he'll live out his years on green WI pastures with our friends' water buffalo. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for adding some of the bovine species to your farm. From all us cow lovers, Thank You!

There's a cartoon called Kappa Mikey which gives the inspiration for the names:
LilyMu (for the girl)
Gonar (or Bwano or Mikey for the boy)
or you could always go with Sonny and Cher.

Dear Martha;
years back--in the 60's we had 60 head of registered herefords, I did greatly enjoy them and their care, my hubby named every one-- as they arrived, within days!!!Those days are now long gone for me,but here is my suggestion,on a personal note-- name them like jed and jody or todd and tina!!We also had some rare species of birds, and they were all named as well!!!
I just love your show, and look forward every nite I can--to view it on "Fine".

3. Jiffy and Skippy
4. Duke and Kaiki(Daisy in Hawaiian)
As a cityfolk who helped out on farms three hours where I lived and helped cleaned chicken and goat pens none of the animalsI cared for had names because they were to be eaten. I hope these two bovines won't end up on the butcher block, but I won't hold it against you if it ends up that way.
Enjoy them!

Hi again Martha, I just love your animals (from Sharkey, Francesca, Billy, Rufus, Clive, your cats, and your chickens}; but I must say these two miniature Herefords are the icing on the cake. They are precious. What about naming them Bonnie and Clyde. Whatever, you name them is fine with me, as long as I know that with your ownership they are so lucky, and I'm jealous I don't have a single animal to love. Nan

Martha, I just wanted you to be aware of the many mispronunciations of the word Hereford. Many people pronounce it like hurfurd. Since the name Hereford is in my family linage, it always irritated me to hear its mispronunciation. Nan ,

Hi-
When I was younger, we had two (full-size) Hereford cows and they were named- male "Applesauce" and the female was named "Patticake". They were like pets, they followed my sister and I all around the pasture. Applesauce loved to be hugged believed or not, and he would look so sad at us when we had to leave.

martha, We have always known how cute miniature hereford cattle are. Until recently we had a herd of 21 miniature cattle. We now have a bull and 2 cows and they are ready to deliver at any time. The babies weigh only about 35 lbs. Although these are beef cattle and are used as such we have yet to find them any where but lawn ornaments in peoples backyard. They really are friendly and make great 4 h projects for the younger children who arent big enough for the larger cattle. our original herd came from nebraska and we will always have "minis" on our farm. thanks maryanne

How about chow-paw and paw-chow, named after after paw paw.Although it is kind of a tough twister and might be kind of confusing it would be a nice memorial to him, and they are kind of/sort of the same color as paw paw.

I was thinking about "Argentina and Petiso".
Argentina because it's one of the major producers of meat. And petiso because in Argentina it means "short".

J.K Rowling has connections to Gloucestershire and the Forest of Dean, which border Herefordshire. Why not call them Harry and Hermoine?
Posted by: Louise | May 08, 2008 at 07:17 PM
Martha,
I am interupting the theme of your name the Hereford pair and I apologize. It comes to my attention after rereading your thread regarding these little Herefords and settling down from the naming contest.........how old do you think they have to be to reproduce? Not to cast false suspicions but 5 years old and nothing yet? Something is wrong OR these "dwarf"(old term) Herefords are infertile.
Carry on with the naming contest.
Posted by: Margie | May 08, 2008 at 08:12 PM
I remember the old Borden ads with the cows ELSIE AND ELMER and their "children" BEAULAH and BEAURGARD. I think these names would bring back memories that were fun and made us smile. Martha's herferds have such gentle features. You can't help but love them. They need names to match their personalities.

Raised on a farm in Central Illinois, I thought I knew a great deal about cattle and other farm animals, but never have I heard of miniature Herefords. The donkeys are adorable, by the way. It's sort of difficult for me to judge the size of the cows--wish we had a normal-sized Hereford next to the miniature ones!!
Names: Martha, I think you should call one Hillary and one Barack. Why? It's about two coming together--meeting in the middle for a good cause and ending. It's a sign of hope for the future.
If not Hilary and Barack, then name one of the Herefords after your NEW friend that I heard you text message--Snoopdogg. I'm not thinking creatively at this moment; I can't think of a female name to go along with Snoopdogg other than Mary J. Juana, and because I don't believe in or promote the use of non-prescribed (illegal) drugs, that's not cool.
My third choice would be Jen and Ben--Jennifer Garner LOVES you. We ("pet people") LOVE our animals, so to grace the name of a living person upon our pet speaks highly of that person!
Have fun cow sitting...just not cow tipping, which would be fairly easy w/those little ones.

How about Opal & Oscar
OR
Opal and Obadiah
Posted by: gail cole | May 08, 2008 at 10:34 PM
Even though I am a vegetarian I voted for the Sir Loin and Madame Bovine options because they are funny, but I think Bearnaise and Mignon would also be good names.
I certainly hope no one plans on eating those sweet faced cuties!

How cute! I can't wait to hear about how Rufus, Clive, and Billie get along with their new friends.
How about Bogey and Bacall?
Posted by: Linda | May 08, 2008 at 11:00 PM
I think they look like a Lucy & Murphy to me
Posted by: Stephine Stottmann (Louisville, KY) | May 09, 2008 at 12:27 AM
Isabel and Ferdinand; Ferdinand is one of my favorite children's books, about the bull who didn't want to fight but just wanted to smell the flowers!

Well, well now. Arent you transforming into a real farm gal.. I think you should name them Samson and Delilah. For short- sammy and dell.

Awwww...they are too cute! And thanks for sharing about your property on the next blog. It's fascinating to see.
Where does a person go about getting a couple of these mini-Herefords? They would be perfect for us!

I think they are very cute. I grew up in the town of Hereford so they remind me of our school mascot the Hereford Bulls.
You could name them George and Gracy. They look like they will have a great time frolicing on the Bedford Estate.
Posted by: Troy | May 09, 2008 at 11:34 AM
I think you should name them Dick and Jane. Guess I am aging myself. hehe

Just a note to tell you, I have been thinking about you this the first Mothers Day without your Mom. I lost my mother nine years ago and still miss her as if she left yesterday. My heart goes out to you and your siblings. The best you can do is recall all the wonderful memories of your mother. I did so enjoy her visits to your show. I too will be missing "Big Martha".
Enjoy your day with Alexis, she is a beautiful young woman.

Ferdinand and Isabella are perfect names. However, I also like Charlotte Corday and Jean Paul Marat.

Dear Martha,
They are just adorable little cows, but I think they look more like a 'Fred and Ethel'! I was curious if you can milk them like their larger cousins and if so, is the milk any different?
Signed,
Vicki in N. Stamford

Your farm is not a farm. It is a dream. You must feel great to be so self sufficient. It is something I would like to do but probably never will. Eating healthy foods grown without chemicals and pesticides is a preventative for most diseases not to mention the incredible taste when they are so fresh.

MARTHA, IM SO GLAD THAT THE "MINI HEREFORD" ARE CATCHING ON. WE HAVE BEEN BREEDERS OF THESE LOVELY CREATURES FOR 5 YEARS NOW. WE HAVE HAD TO GO IN THE SHOW RING WITH THE LARGER HEREFORD AND STILL HAVE HAD MANY BLUE RIBBON WINNERS.I WOULD LOVE TO COME ON YOUR SHOW TO TALK ABOUT THESE DOCILE ANIMALS.I COULD BRING OUR CALVES THAT WOULD BE BORN IN JUNE.THERE IS SO MUCH INTERESTING INFORMATION ON THESE CATTLE, IM SURE YOUR AUDIENCE WOULD APPRECIATE. Martha:
I've been trying to leave a comment on this blog for days, but have been so busy with work.
I think Isabel and Ferdinand are the best choices. My second choices are Lily and Carlos, which would be a nice way to honor your loyal staff.
I can't wait to know what the final decision is!
Happy Mother's Day!

I read that there is more high end meat on the minis than the regular. The Jersey cow is little too and looks like a deer that is fawn colored with big eyes. This cow gives the most creme in her milk. You should get one of them too! Then you will have the meat, milk, eggs, poultry, fruits, and organic vegetables. Whats missing? Feta cheese? uh oh- here comes the mini goats and are they ever cute.

I hope we get to hear about the final choices here on the blog. Unfortunately, I am not always able to watch the show. I would hate to miss the announcement of the names.
I am still pulling for Stilton & Cheddar.

Jen & Ben because they named their Yellow Lab Martha Stewart.

I think you have overlooked the best suggestion: Charles and Camilla!
Posted by: Barb | May 13, 2008 at 12:58 PM
I think you should name them Jen & Ben. Jen is always so great when she is on your show, I know she would love to be the namesake of your cow!! And also being another Jen myself, I am a little biased...

I think those pet cows are so cute. I will forward this link on to my Aunt who has a farm in southeasten Colorado. She will love them! Those miniature Herefords look like they love their new field at Aunt Martha's.

Hello there Martha,
They are SO sweet. Such gentle little faces and they give the broadest kisses.
I would like to suggest that they have names befitting their heritage.
How about EDGAR and VICTORIA?
They are two main roads leading into Hereford on the A49!
