Last weekend, I was invited to the 7th annual Polo for Children luncheon to benefit the Hole in The Wall Gang Camp held at the exclusive Greenwich Polo Club in Conyers Farm. Polo for Children, of course, features a most exciting polo match. A very delicious luncheon was served and there was also a live and a silent auction that took place. My hosts for the event were Jane Green, the author and Ian Warburg, my friend.
These are my hosts, author Jane Green and businessman, Ian Warburg. Isn't her hat wonderful?
Here I am with Jane and Ian. Jane was celebrating her 40th birthday.
Many of her friends, including her lovely parents, flew in from London
for the weekend, which included the very worthwhile fund raiser for the camp.
My friend, Susan Warburg, Ian's mother, first introduced me to the Newmans many years ago.
The man himself, Paul Newman, founder of the camp
and me. I have known Paul and his wife, Joanne Woodward, for many
years. In fact, I raised money for the camp years ago with a show house
in Westport, CT.
Freddie Mannering came to the US with her mom, Giselle, a well-known
British interior designer. Freddie loved the event which was focused,
of course, on children.
Here I am wearing one of Suzanne's wonderful hats, along with Giselle, and Freddie.
James Naughton, the very talented actor/singer, joined his great friend, founder of the camp, Paul Newman, to conduct the auction - lots of money was raised.
Tabitha, Jane Green's daughter and a friend - face paint is very popular amongst the young party goers.

Hello, Martha:
Are we going to see him in your show by any chance?

Martha,
You look gorgeous in your hat as always.
Thanks for sharing the wonderful blog about Hole in the Wall Camp. It's a wonderful charity and am a consumer of Newman's Own Products!
I remember in the late 70's/80's that stretch of land for sale in Ashford with that beautiful pond and remembering how thrilled we were when we heard Paul Newman purchased it for the kids!
God bless you both for all the work you do.
Paula

A very interesting blog.
I have always admired the Newmans for their great sense of giving. I'm sure the children in need appreciate it greatly. I lived in Connecticut back in the 70s and heard a lot of positive feedback. Best wishes to all.

I have quite a collection of Paul Newnan movies-what a dish, a fine actor and wonderful scripts!
A man of great character and integrity and his philanthropy in latter years hasn't gone unnoticed, either.
I wish him well!

Dear Ms Stewart - my own children attended camp for many years - and I volunteered a few summers as a counselor. One of my favorite things to do with campers was to read the little plaques on the theater seats naming the benefactors. I always pointed out your plaque - and the kids loved knowing that you were a "camp person" too. Blessings to all who share their resources - it truly changes these children's lives. They really blossom there - and many get through the winter on the promise that they can return to camp in the summer. Thanks to anyone who supports the Newmans and this wonderful place.

Thank you for showing the photographs of Paul Newman and the wonderful benefit for the camp. I have always admired him for all that he's done with his talents and his deep generosity for others - yet he always seems to be having a great time. I wish him well.

I appreciate your publishing the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp benefit. Now ak your readers to donate! My daughter has been a camper there for 3 years and it has transformed her life, which has seen much illness & suffering. She always smiles when she speaks of the camp. And it has been totally free- which is so important to parents who have so many expenses due to illness of a child. I now read the Paul Newman is ill, and my prayers are with him. He has done so much for so many, and in person he is the kindest most unassuming man.

Well...I've never met anyone who is more of a Paul Newman fan than I am!
My family and friends have made fun of my "obsession" for years...but I don't mind.
I am thrilled to see recent photos of Mr. Newman at one of his many charity events.
My all-encompassing devotion to Paul Newman began when I was in the sixth grade...I started keeping a scrapbook at that time.
I am now 47 years old...and I admire him today for so much more than his beautiful blue eyes!
He is such a generous...talented...pro-active...devoted...positive person...and not a bad actor!
I've watched every single movie he's ever made...yes...even The Silver Chalice...and in all these years he's never disappointed me.
It may sound silly...but one of my lifelong dreams has always been to meet Mr. Newman....and I'm definitely NOT the groupie type!
I've been very close twice in my life i.e. once in the late 70's at the Hallett Motor Raceway in Stillwater, OK and again in the early 90's in Kansas City, MO when he and Joanne Woodward were filming Mr. and Mrs. Bridge.
It seems that almost everyone in Kansas City spotted him during the filming of the movie but me!
I wish Mr. Newman the best and hope he's here with us (ME!) for many...many years to come.

Having grown up in South- & Westport, and summers having ushered at the Country Playhouse, I had frequently seen the Newman/Woodward clan about town and at the ice cream parlour (is it still there?) across the Road from the Playhouse. The Newmans/Woodwards have always been the most gracious and unassuming people! Their good works are testament.
And you have always been the purveyor of charm; elevating everyone's consciousness to what looks, smells, grows, tastes and works better. Thank you for sharing this event with us.

Hi Martha,
I have been a both a Camper and a Counselor in training at both the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in Ashford, CT and at another one of Paul's camps called Double 'H' Hole in the Woods Ranch in Lake Luzerne, NY. Paul Newman is a great man, He is truly a hero to many of the campers who attend the camps all around the world. We greatly appreciate what he has done for us. Many memories have been formed at those camps that will never be taken away. Thank you for supporting the camps and for helping to raise money. The campers, counselors, and staff appreciate it more than you will ever know. God Bless you.
Shannon Drozd from NJ
We love you Paul!

I used to go through the TV Guide when I was 12 - 13 years old, (I'm 50 now) looking for Paul Newman movies. He has always been my favorite.

What a delightful post! Thanks so much for this little peak at one of my favorite "heroes"... everything about Paul Newman adds joy to my life... his films, his food and most of all, his being Paul! Plus of course it's fun to see you, Martha, at this very worthwile event... Hole in the Wall is such an incredible organization... helping kids enjoy life as they cope with illness is the most important cause I can imagine. Please keep posting such snippets of real life in Connecticut!

Paul Newman since 1982 has donated profits from his salad dressings to a panoply of charities. This is precisely what Jesus asked of men.
