Fourth of July Weekend Continued in East Hampton
We flew from Maine to East Hampton on Long Island for the second half of the four-day weekend. I had some work to do there and had also planned to attend some lively functions out on the East End, which is the ‘happening place’ during the summer months. Of course, I did a little entertaining, as well. Pierre and I served a beautiful lunch on Saturday and a delicious and robust breakfast on Sunday.
The hydrangeas were in full bloom at Lily Pond. They thrive in the salt air.
More hydrangeas - their blue mopheads look wonderful in teal containers.
And even more - I have many different varieties of these wonderful
shrubs. Many of the shrubs were started from cuttings that I obtained
here and there - mostly from flower arrangements at friends' homes.
The front porch at Lily Pond is perfect for big or small parties. Lunch
for 20 was easily set up on this massive porch, which wraps around the
front of the house.
We also had a breakfast for friends on the 6th of July. The table was
set with vintage hobnail glass and milk glass. The cups and saucers
are from the Martha Stewart collection available at Macy's.
We set up a small table next to each breakfast table. I served
delicious yogurt from Smith Family Farm in Maine, freshly squeezed (and
I mean from real oranges) orange juice, maple syrup, and both skim and
whole milk for coffee.
Here's the white table - old glass, white linens, and those same Martha Stewart cafe-au-lait cups.
These are some of my guests for breakfast - Sheraton Kalouria - our
president of television, Martin Miller, Madge Miller, me, Memrie Lewis,
and of course our very own Darcy Miller Nussbaum - editorial director
of Weddings.
Sweet girls wearing identical dresses - Ella, Daisy, and cousin Emma.
Dwarfed by the giant viburnum and rhododendron hedges, the little girls
danced and pranced, as if posing for a John Singer Sargent portrait -
remember 'Carnation, Lily, Lily Rose?'
Here I am with the three beauties and Grandmother, Madge.

Posted May 23, 2008

as I write this I have my photo of hydrangeas which I photographed at a nursery outside of Beaufort South Carolina and they are as large as your Lily Pond specimens or perhaps larger same exact color I agree they MUST just thrive on salt air

I'm in Chatham, Cape Cod for the summer, (my boyfriend's family has a home here), and the blue hydrangeas are everywhere here as well! Spectacular flowers and make a great quick centerpiece.

Lovely little angels. I would take the one that comes to me first with interest. Of course, if you can handle all three, even better. When I picked out my kitten at the pound, he was the one that stuck both paws through the cage to wrap around my hand. And he was a loving, friend and companion for 19 years. A real buddy and love.

Dear Martha,
Love the pictures from Lily Ponds, the table on your porch is the same as mine. Mine comes from my Great Aunt Catherine, from Boston, MA. Bought at her wedding in 1919/20.
It is in pristine condition. I think yours may be a longer table, mine sits 6 comfortably. I have the matching chairs and two still have the original seat covers in a floral vinyl/oil cloth type of material. It had a tempered glass top, that was not clear like yours, but textured, and opaque. Unfortunately it broke a few years ago, and we have replaced it with a wood top from another tabletop that had no legs. I hope to replace it in the future with glass again. My husband and I use is everyday from April to November, for breakfast and dinner on our front porch as well.

Martha,
Lily Pond is beautiful! Love the photos of Darcy's cute daughters.
What color is your porch ceiling? I love the green hue?
Can you also blog about Merrill clogs? Would love to know more about those!
Thanks again for such great photographs! I made a fresh blueberry pie from berries I picked this morning. Can I bring it and sit with you on your porch?
Have a great week!

Hi, Martha,
Your Fourth of July weekend in East Hampton sounds wonderful--indeed a "happening place!" Lily Pond is so beautiful. I enjoyed seeing the photos of you and your friends. The blue hydrangeas are stunning. My grandparents planted some by the garage at their home long ago.
I like your table settings. The food you served there must have been delicious. Yum!
Thanks again.

Oh, I love the hydrangeas! I just want to bury my face in their soft petals. I love how easy hydrangeas are to dry, and they remain so beautiful. I simply let the water in the vase go dry, and they are perfect!
Those little girls are precious, thank you for sharing.
