Who doesn't love a crunchy carrot, they're great in carrot and raisin salad, or baby carrots are a veritable snack that will keep you satisfied until dinner. One listener from Homegrown also loved carrots, but found that her carrots never stored well. So she called the Homegrown guys for some tips on storing her carrots so they will be more sustainable.
The first thing you should take into account when growing carrots is choosing a variety is designed for storage, says Andrew. Try the St. Valery variety, which is known to store well.
After you harvest your carrots, cut off the green tops to 1/2 inch, doing this keeps carrots from shriveling. The green tops draw moisture from the carrots. It's good to pack your carrots in moist sand and keep them in a cold, even-temperatured place, like your basement. Doing this guarantees crispness. But avoid storing carrots near apples or other fruits that give off the gas ethylene while ripening.
