Sunday afternoons for me are for street hockey! I play in a co-ed league of about 400 others in New York City’s East Village. Since this year’s season just began, we’ve had lots of team outings, but not one that was strictly Ladies’ Night. So we got our girls together for an evening of food, fun, and crafts projects. We decided that we needed some matching accessories for our uniforms so we set to work on knee socks, wrist bands, bandanas, and scrunchies.

Our art director for the evening, and my fellow defense-woman, Amy Kovner never crafts without her grandmother’s beautiful portable sewing case. Well stocked and perfectly organized, it contained just about everything we needed.
Here’s Amy working on the fabric for our scrunchies and bandanas. This project allowed me to FINALLY have a great use for my new sewing machine!
Amy designed stencils with our team name and logo. We put books into the socks to stretch them out and to give us a flat surface, then taped on the stencils, and painted over them. With a limited amount of space, we mostly worked on the floor on big re-usable tablecloths. Here are Kim and Shannon working on their socks.
A close up of the stenciling.
We found that the easiest way to design the wristbands was while we were wearing them as Sarah demonstrates.
Here’s the final product, sitting in front of a fan to dry.
Using Amy’s favorite recipe, we made some delicious chocolate covered strawberries with a special twist. First we dipped the strawberries in melted chocolate and waited for them to set...
After the chocolate set, we injected the hollow center part of each berry with Irish Cream Liqueur. Delicious!
And what’s a party at my house without my famous chocolate chip cookies served on a Martha Stewart platter?
On Sunday we got to show off our new gear to the rest of the league!
I can’t wait for the next crafting night! What other accessories should we make or decorate for the team?

What about the guys on your team, don't they get knee socks, wrist bands, bandanas, and scrunchies?
Well, maybe not scrunchies ...

I think Victor would look great in scrunchies

We told the guys that if they wanted anything we would make it... oddly enough they expressed no interest in personalized gear :)

I think you guys should decorate your hockey sticks. That would look cool.

Um, Angela, it would be exceedingly difficult trying to attach a scrunchie to my bald pate!!
