A combination of fireworks and food, sounds like the 4th of July, but no, it's Bastille Day, the 14th of July! On July 14, 1789 the Bastille (a prison) was stormed, the few prisoners within released, and the French Republic was born. There are celebrations galore in France and many here in the US.
Today, we had our own party in the studio during "Everyday Food." I prepared three French dishes: a simple French potato salad -- small creamy potatoes, cooked in their jackets, then peeled, thickly sliced and tossed with sherry or wine, mustard, olive oil, and thinly siced scallions.
Next up a lentil salad with carrots, roasted peppers, fava beans, and a hefty splash of red wine vinegar. I used the small green French lentils du Puy which are particularly nutty tasting. Finally, the simplest green beans -- steamed and served with a garlic mayo on the side. All that was missing was the fireworks!
