Every woman in love dreams of getting an engagement ring, but not too many put much thought into maintaining it. And you should! Your diamond should be checked once a year to make sure it’s not loose in its setting. As for keeping your diamond shiny, I learned this trick from Martha: Soak your ring in a mixture of 1/2 cold water and 1/2 household ammonia for 30 minutes. Drain on a paper towel, and voila! Your diamond is as good as new.

I know that many chemicals can damage platinum -- is ammonia safe for diamonds in a platinum setting? I am a chemist, so I've learned (the hard way) to wear gloves at ALL times when I'm working in the lab to try and protect my poor ring...

My jeweler told me a really good diamond does not need to be cleaned. The only parts that will need cleaning are the platinum/gold part of the ring if it shows. She told me if I must clean it, I should use a piece of silk.
