Everyone wants to get in shape for their wedding day. It makes sense: you want to justify spending as much as you did on that dress by looking fabulous, on top of the fact that you know your wedding pictures are going to be around forever. Having this motivation can be the perfect way to get started with an exercise routine--one that will hopefully last long after you've tied the knot. I talked to Jennifer Beaumont, a certified Iyengar yoga teacher, about the benefits of yoga practice pre- and post-nuptials, and here's what she had to say:
"A yoga practice can help you look great, improving your posture and giving you that glow from within, and also keep you feeling well, more poised, less stressed. These effects last not only throughout the wedding planning phase and the wedding festivities, but they help us live healthier and happily ever after.
One of the best ways to learn yoga is to find a class near you. I recommend finding an experienced, certified teacher who can help you start out safely. Check out the teacher search here, which will help you find a highly trained teacher in your area.
If you can't find a good class, the next best thing is a good book. The most senior female Iyengar yoga teacher in the U.S., Patricia Walden, writes wonderful yoga sequences for all the phases of a woman's life. Check out this book that she wrote in collaboration with yoga journal editor, Linda Sparrowe. Here, you'll find practice sequences for a regular practice that will strengthen, tone, and improve your posture and body alignment. There are also sequences for specific goals like increasing energy, relieving backaches, PMS, headaches, or restorative sequences that help you recover from stress, and feel your best, not only on your wedding day but beyond.
A weekly class can help get you started on a home practice using a book or DVD (try one of Patricia's, "Yoga for Beginners").
I used my yoga practice to help me cope with wedding planning stress and had a blissful wedding day two and a half years ago (practiced that morning), and now my yoga practice is keeping me healthy and happy through pregnancy (currently eight months pregnant and still feeling great)! This goes to show that a daily (or at least regular) yoga practice will help you feel poised and live in the moment on your wedding day and every day after. "

I think this is a great idea. Often times brides are so focused on getting ready for the wedding, they don't take time to relax and focus.

My FSIL and her (then) fiance took up yoga together during their engagement, along with a modified South Beach-type diet, to lose weight and get in shape. They both looked great on their wedding day (he, in particular, lost a lot of weight he had gained during college and after), and have kept it up since -- now she's pregnant with their second child, and my future niece, age 18 months, loves trying to do baby yoga with them at home!

Yoga has been such a great stress reliever for me. Aerobic activity is great as well (got to love those endorphins), but yoga can be so soothing! I also find that yoga can create a much leaner look than other athelic activities.
